Its because, Shani has not forgotten where he comes from (Chicago) or who he is. The media wants a piece of this golden boy so bad it confuses them when Shani is reluctant to answer their lame questions. After the 1500, a tight lipped Shani gave one or two word answers to the questions being thrown at him, then he was asked, "if he was mad?" Of course he's mad, all he wants to do is skate not become a media whore or some BS American idol that America will tear down later.
Shani is one of the top stories of the 06 Winter Olympics! -

Sun, February 19, 2006 - 12:51 PMi really felt for him last night when he was being interviewed... all week the media have been making such a big damn deal about all this crap... and then to ask him that question, "how does it feel to be the first african-american?"... i don't know, it just bothered me that she asked him that... they are trying so hard to create controversy and something about that question just felt insensitive, i can't explain how or why but it just left me feeling icky in my stomach...
no wonder he doesn't want to talk to the media... he just wants to be left alone... it broke my heart to see him *so* uncomfortable like that...
i wish everybody would just back off of him and let him have his olympics... i really admire him... -

Mon, February 20, 2006 - 8:07 AMIts some shit that for sure....interviewer should ask some one how does it fell to be the ten thousandth white person to win the 1500..the trying to make a TO of this.... but in Defense of NBC they showed where OHno and SHani were outcasts or rebels of short track...they also showed showed shani mom and how she did it her way not the GOV Skate Federation...Oprah and Ellen are just waitin for this one..... -

he's an amazing athelete, a kick ass speed skater.... seems to be a nice and humble man..... and, if you want an athlete as role-model, then he seems like he'd be a very good choice... -
