Where is everyone? I am the lone voice in the tribe tonight. I figure someone should represent each night, especially with the end drawing so near.... of the Olympics and, effectively this tribe... : (

Check out this article.... I hate to say it, but I think he's right.

Let's go back to once every four years... it's a downright shame the lack of interest this year... sad sad sad

and the Winter Olympics ROCK so much harder than the summer version... at least I think so... I've favored them since I was a kid

I got a couple of reasons the olympics are sucking ASS. Reason #A: Personally, I can't wait to support GM, IBM, Home Depot, yadda, yadda, yadda. Merchandising and corporate fealty are the commonest of denominators in the Olympic spirit. Reason Roman numeral II: What the hell are these sports? Team pursuit in skating? They just made that shit up. Luge AND skeleton? I'll tell you what, whatever way you wanna go down the shoot, helmet first or boots first, just go. (btw, doubles men luge is sooo brokeback. Now girl-on-girl sledding, that I'd pay to see! And finally raison numero three, the time zone thing has killed the suspense. It's not like the olden tymes when I had to read the wire reports out of Grenoble. Why you kids nowadays , what with your in'nernet and radios, I hear the results before I can home to a cold wife and a hot toddy. Number four; check it USA; live by the medal count, die by the medal count. So solly you hockey team no winnee. WTF? A'murkins are only really happy if they get a miracle on ice or a perky banged Lipinski skating out of anonimity and into your heart. Oh, and did I mention cable? Fuck a bunch of cable. I'm not gonna buy extra cable so I can watch the freakin' Olympics. If I had that kind of moolah, don't you think I'd have the Spice Channel instead? ...unless we could the chicks in the skiin tight suits on the sled together....

whoa nelly! i dont' have to buy special cable to watch, so ???

as to the time difference we just gotta suck it up... we can't hold the olympics on our continent every time! ; ) this time zone thing doesn't really bug me a lot

as for merchandising.. that's always been a part of it, nothing new there it's a part of all sports... i don't like it much, but there it is... and the special olympic commercials are like the super brawl ads... a show unto themselves, they pull out all the stops! it's a movie, man

i sure as hell ain't buying no GM car! esp not a "sorry about your dick!" hummer (yeah, i did yell that out to a guy who drove one past me on the street one day)

as to the rest, the new sports? no problem at all for me... I like luge and skeleton both... like the bobsled too, but I'm NOT going to start calling it the bobsleigh now just cuz tv does...

to me they are different enough... at least as different as ice skating and ice dancing... i'm glad they have both... adding and making up sports... been doing that from the git go too... they didn't even have a winter olympics for awhile... just summer... they used to not have women's speedskating.... and god knows they didn't have snowboarding...

did you check out that article? the death of the olympics has nothing to do with the sports, what they are, having new ones added...

it's the goddamn decision to alternate them... so there are olympics every two years...they did it to keep the olympics in the forefront of people's minds... but it's back fired... they aren't special anymore... the winter olympics suffer most of all from the tedium... it's 2 and 1/2 years from the winter olympics to the summer... but it's only 18 months from the summer olympics to the winter olympics used to be only every 4 years, a real event... MAJOR!

...and don't get me started about the "amatuer" bullshit.
      ...and curling? That's not a sport. It's a game.
... and guys getting d'qued for hair sauce and antihistimines.
... and that crappy graphic "fire" place. Just cheesy and weird.
.... and by the way buddy, you are no Jim McKay.
... and I hate cowbells unless I'm blazing in the grass; can you dig it?
... and the "up close and personals" sucked this year.
...and giant slalom AND parallel giant slalom?
... and you know those girl skaters? That's just flesh colored lycra, they're not nakee on ice.

LOL it just doesn't seem all that different from other olympics... things never remain stagnant, the only thing constant is change...

most of it doesn't bother me... incl the change on amateur status (i agree with what the guy in the article said on this and almost all points)

do they even call it "up close and personal" anymore ; )

"up close and personal" is probably trademarked by cbs or abc so nbc can't touch it...

i agree that alternating every two years was a mistake... to me there was something magical about the every four years thing and knowing you were going into "the olympic year"....

i agree with angelboots in that i am happy to see new sports... bring 'em on...

and i'm not all that worried about how many medals the usa wins to tell the truth... i have always been much more interested in the individual athletes and their stories, their personalities... i know you will probably all be mad at me but i didn't want belbin and agosto to win ice dancing... i was happy to see russia win... and i was rooting VERY hard for dear irinia slutskaya to win tonight and devestated that she didn't... the fact that she has vasculitis and the sad story of her mom made me strongly pull for her... personally i find sasha cohen to be a bit too much of a primadonna - she treats her coach like crap and behaves like the whole world has been handed to her on a silver platter... on the whole i think Shizuka Arakawa totally deserved the gold - her performance was lovely... cohen should not have won silver... she falls on her bum twice and wins silver? i'm sorry... not fair...

all in all, i'm very sad the olympics are drawing to a close, but then i always am... i always suffer post-olympics depression - i don't wanna go back to normal tv...

oh and angelboots, one more thing, i've always loved the winter games the best too! but we are so in the minority... oh well...

I'm still not sure why that plucky little Russion didn't win? and i agree about Sasha... that frozen, crazy-eyed look she had on her face after the short program... smile stretched over her face like a grinning goblin... she looked like a goddamn stepford wife!!!

oh, and i was very very touched by the story of the turkish girl...

and I get post-olympic depression too... I am already preparing for withdrawals... we got one more night of Bode.... please god I hope he wins a medal of some kind

but yes the winter olympics suffer most under this new set up, it will be 2 1/2 years before we have the next summer olympics... but it's only been a year and half since the last summer olympics... people are olympic'd out...

and yeah, i think most of the summer sports are boring by comparison to the winter games

and guess what? i live in seattle, wa and I WILL be going to Vancouver for a few days for the next winter olympics!! anyone care to join me?
